SUMMARY:Music Series: Skillethead
DESCRIPTION:Setting roots in the high and dry Central Oregon desert\, Skillethead calls forth the best of bluegrass old and new. They ground themselves firmly in the bluegrass traditions of driving fiddle tunes\, layered harmonies\, and single mics\, all the while weaving in inspiration and originality gleaned from genres far and wide. You can expect to hear a Stanley Brothers number right alongside a stirring original or a rollicking rock cover done in Skillethead’s own unique fashion. The spectrum reaches far and wide\, the bluegrass universe is expanding\, and Skillethead is on that ride! \nThe brain child of late night jams and carrot picking daydreams\, Skillethead was christened in the spring of 2019 by friends and longtime musical revelers Joe Schulte\, Benji Nagel\, and Garrett Miller. “I do believe we should start a band” someone said\, and thus it was so. With the additions of bass/vocal powerhouse Aaron Moore and fiddle maestro Casey Willis\, Skillethead is now a bona fide tour-de-force bluegrass machine. \nConcert is sponsored by the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce.

SUMMARY:Creative Heights Artist Residency Grant: Laura Klement & Corrine Vegter
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to Oregon Community Foundation’s Creative Heights Grant\, we are thrilled to host Laura Klement and Corrine Vegter at the Spray General Store to lead a woodworking class for women. \nLearn how to safely use tools in a supportive environment and build confidence to DIY your dream projects! In this class you will learn how to use the miter saw aka chop saw\, drills sanders and nail gun to make and take home your very own boot bench.  \nEach class is built for beginners to learn basic skills including:\n \n\nDESIGN AND LAYOUT\nMEASURING AND MARKING\nCUTTING WITH POWER SAWS\nASSEMBLING AND FINISHING\nAND MORE!\n\n“Ladies… LADIES! You gotta trust me on this. Taking a class with Laura and Enerstructa was one of the best decisions of my life. NOT KIDDING. I like to think I’m independent\, and in many ways I am\, as are you. But learning my way around power tools with Laura\, well that’s been a whole other level of liberation and empowerment. Her classes are about carpentry and building stuff out of wood\, at face value. But they are also about building confidence and community. You’ll learn specific technical skills and be in the company of other like-minded females\, and walk away with a completed project and skills you’ll wanna tell your friends about (hence this review). If you are on the fence about taking a class with her\, here’s my pitch: don’t sit on the fence when you can learn to build the fence yourself. BOOM! I’m 100% Team Enerstructa and I think you will be too.” \n– Debi B.

SUMMARY:Music Series: Jenny Don't & the Spurs
DESCRIPTION:We are in for a real treat when Jenny Don’t & the Spurs comes to town. \nJenny Don’t & the Spurs have been pioneering their own path in the music world for over a dozen years. Known for their high-energy Country Western style and captivating stage presence\, they’ve garnered a global following with their infectious enthusiasm\,  and extensive discography\, featuring three albums\, an EP\, and nine singles. \nTheir 2021 LP\, Fire on the Ridge\, expanded their horizons\, leading them on tours to continents where few other country bands have had the opportunity to perform\, affirming their formidable presence in the country music scene. This latest release\, “Broken Hearted Blue\,” set to debut on June 14th\, 2024\, adds even more fuel to their fire. \nWith their exciting new album\, Broken Hearted Blue Jenny Don’t and the Spurs present 10 dynamic songs that channel the essence of the Northwest’s music sounds while evoking the nostalgia of the Western frontier. \nJenny Don’t earned her moniker in her youth for her strong-willed and independent nature\, often defying authority figures much to their consternation. This inherent rebelliousness led her to resonate with the authentic outlaw spirit of Country Western music. Such influences shine through in songs like “Pain in my Heart” and “One More Night\,” where the band channels the bold attitude and vocal style reminiscent of classic country legends like Johnny Paycheck and George Jones. Their music authentically captures the outlaw spirit while paying homage to the genre’s iconic figures. \nBorn in New Mexico\, Jenny later relocated to Washington state at a young age. Growing up\, she navigated the contrasting landscapes of the lush Pacific Northwest and the vast Southwestern desert\, which greatly influenced her songwriting. In the title track “Broken Hearted Blue\,” Jenny’s haunting vocals capture the intensity of a fleeting romantic moment\, complemented by lead guitarist Christopher March’s guitar work\, which echoes the haunting allure of the desert night sky with its reverb-drenched tones.

SUMMARY:Music Series: Rich Swanger
DESCRIPTION:Rich Swanger is an Oregon based songwriter with roots in folk\, gospel\, and country-blues music. Born amongst the Appalachian hills of Pennsylvania\, he was surrounded by song from the very beginning. He discovered harmony in the church choir and found an attraction to twang hearing his father strum country classics around the house. This led to a wild love for timeless melodies and rock-solid songwriting. A move to the Pacific Northwest in 2004 proved to be the catalyst he needed to start releasing some of his own music\, and further explore his love of the song. \n\n\n\nHis humble solo project\, Seahorse\, started in the late 2000’s and grew organically over the next decade to include some of the region’s most inspiring musicians. Sensing a need to address that change and growth\, he stepped out from behind the moniker in 2018 with a self-titled release\, ‘Rich Swanger & The Little Known Band.’ RS & LKB transformed his quiet\, folky originals into glistening country and blues songs\, while also emboldening him as a performer. Lo and behold\, he began to heed the deeper call of music. \nRich’s songs have been featured on the television show Shameless and his song “Didn’t Make a Sound” recently won Portland’s Folk Festival songwriting contest . He has also played TEDx Portland alongside Rebecca Jordan Smith (Prince\, John Legend). Swanger has recorded 4 full length albums and performs regularly around the Pacific Northwest as a solo act and with his group\, The Little Known Band. \nConcert is sponsored by the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce.

SUMMARY:Visual Art Exhibit: Home Is Where I Want To Be
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate artists in the John Day River Territory. All art forms depicting a sense of home are accepted. See Event Submission link to participate in the exhibit. \nHome \n\n\n\n“Home” can be interpreted in so many unique ways: home is where the heart is\, my home away from home\, home home on the range\, make yourself at home\, mi casa es tu casa. The musical group The Talking Heads nailed our universal feeling about home with their lyric line “Home is where I want to be”. Don’t we all long to feel like we are at home no matter where we are? This show’s title has been exemplified by all of these John Day River Territory artists both literally and in a loose manner: home is where we create. From sculptures to wood carvings to paintings and photography and more\, what better way to feel at home than to conjure up and express our creative energies? We hope you enjoy this collection of art and crafts from those who live in the surrounding area. After all\, this is our shared homeland\, a place where we want to be.\n\n \nOur gratitude goes to the Oregon Community Foundation for operating support\, the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the artist reception\, PushDot Studio for printing fine art photographs and providing frames\, the Roundhouse Foundation for purchasing the black art panels and to the Wheeler County Cultural Heritage Coalition for a donation toward securing lighting.  Special thanks to the Juniper Arts Council for providing their fiscal sponsorship and to our private donors as we could not operate without their support.\n\nLastly but not least\, we thank the talented participating artists and the audience who are here to support them.\n\n\n \nThis Must Be The Place\nsong by the Talking Heads\n\n \nHome is where I want to bePick me up and turn me roundI feel numb\, burn with a weak heartI guess I must be having funThe less we say about it the betterMake it up as we go alongFeet on the groundHead in the skyIt’s ok I know nothing’s wrong… nothing\nHi yo I got plenty of timeHi yo you got light in your eyesAnd you’re standing here beside meI love the passing of timeNever for moneyAlways for love\nCover up + say goodnight… say goodnight…Home\, is where I want to beBut I guess I’m already thereI come home\, she lifted up her wingsGuess that this must be the placeI can’t tell one from another\nDid I find you\, or you find me?There was a time before we were born\nIf someone asks\, this where I’ll be where I’ll beHi yo we drift in and outHi yo sing into my mouthOut of all those kinds of peopleYou got a face with a viewI’m just an animal looking for a homeShare the same space for a minute or twoAnd you love me till my heart stopsLove me till I’m deadEyes that light up\, eyes look through youCover up the blank spotsHit me on the head ah ooh\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Roundhouse Foundation Artist Residency: Terry Moss Wood Carving Workshop + Chainsaw Carving Demo
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wood carving workshop and chainsaw carving demo at the Spray General Store! Many thanks to the Roundhouse Foundation for making this possible. \nTerry Moss has been an accomplished woodworker for much of his adult life. But in 2016 he wanted to try something different and was drawn to the idea of woodcarving. He took his first woodcarving class and as they say\, “the rest is history.” Terry has always been interested in the caricature style of woodcarving and enjoys making people smile. Three years ago\, he attended a chainsaw carving event and was fascinated by the idea of connecting caricature to larger blocks of wood. After a chainsaw carving class and many hours of practice\, Terry has become a “chainsaw artist.” He recently competed in the Oregon Divisional Chainsaw Carving Championships in Reedsport Oregon. Like his carvings in miniature\, his work continues to bring joy and big smiles to his audience. \nTerry is the current President of the Capitol Woodcarvers Club in Salem Oregon and the President of the Northwest Carving Academy in Ellensburg Washington. With some tips and a few techniques\, his instruction can send you on your own woodcarving journey. His class will feature an overview of the craft\, basic tool selection\, sharpening and safety. Students will then carve their own western themed ornament. \nSaturday\, July 29 \n11am Presentation (open to all)\n1-4pm Carving workshop (open to 10 participants) \nSunday\, July 30 10am\nChainsaw carving demo (open to all)
