SUMMARY:Creative Heights Artist Residency: Jody Miller
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed photographer Jody Miller will show us how to take our mat printed photographs and make them into a beautiful art piece using the art form of encaustics. \nLearn how to make your photographs sing and become one-of-a-kind dreamy “paintings” using encaustic wax\, adding texture and applying colors. You’ll learn the basics of photoencaustic processes\, painting and fusing hot wax to your photographs. We’ll apply textures and add oil colors to take them to another level. There is so much that can be done with encaustic wax and this will cover just a couple of techniques to get you started and inspired to go further with this fascinating medium. \nEach participant must bring an 8X8 MATTE finished print to work with. \nTwo sessions: \nMay 15   3pm-4pm \nMay 16   10am-5pm \nThis workshop was made possible by Oregon Community Foundation’s Creative Heights Grant.

SUMMARY:Creative Heights Artist Residency: Adrian Klein\, Nature Photographer
DESCRIPTION:Join Adrian Klein to photograph the geological wonders of the John Day region. Layers of colorful rock from rich reds to bright blues will be waiting for you at a couple locations we plan to visit. This small group workshop is your chance to photograph and get feedback\, to help you think and grow as a photographer. From the golden hours that bookend a day to the brighter light in between you will learn there is no such thing as bad light\, just different ideas in what and how to photograph or process a scene. Opportunities will range from small close-up scenes to the larger landscape. Adrian often prefers to keep an open mind on the subjects he comes across rather than always having preconceived goals of a specific final result ahead of time. \nBeyond the field locations we will visit throughout the day\, there will be the chance for optional meals together. I have found over the years that time discussing photography informally through meals is almost as important as time photographing in the field as a group. While we will start and end in Spray be prepared for driving part of the time to reach each location\, as far as ~1hr with focus along the highway 19 and 26 loop. Car pooling is encouraged. A final schedule will be handed out Friday 10/4 during the evening presentation event for those attending the workshop the following day yet be prepared for meeting up well before sunrise to drive to the first location. If you have specific questions about the workshop don’t hesitate to reach out to adrian@adrianklein.com. \nFriday\, October 4    7Pm Lecture\, Meet+Greet \nSaturday\, October   5am-7pm Onsite workshop

SUMMARY:Music Series: Skillethead
DESCRIPTION:Setting roots in the high and dry Central Oregon desert\, Skillethead calls forth the best of bluegrass old and new. They ground themselves firmly in the bluegrass traditions of driving fiddle tunes\, layered harmonies\, and single mics\, all the while weaving in inspiration and originality gleaned from genres far and wide. You can expect to hear a Stanley Brothers number right alongside a stirring original or a rollicking rock cover done in Skillethead’s own unique fashion. The spectrum reaches far and wide\, the bluegrass universe is expanding\, and Skillethead is on that ride! \nThe brain child of late night jams and carrot picking daydreams\, Skillethead was christened in the spring of 2019 by friends and longtime musical revelers Joe Schulte\, Benji Nagel\, and Garrett Miller. “I do believe we should start a band” someone said\, and thus it was so. With the additions of bass/vocal powerhouse Aaron Moore and fiddle maestro Casey Willis\, Skillethead is now a bona fide tour-de-force bluegrass machine. \nConcert is sponsored by the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce.

SUMMARY:Creative Heights Artist Residency Grant: Laura Klement & Corrine Vegter
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to Oregon Community Foundation’s Creative Heights Grant\, we are thrilled to host Laura Klement and Corrine Vegter at the Spray General Store to lead a woodworking class for women. \nLearn how to safely use tools in a supportive environment and build confidence to DIY your dream projects! In this class you will learn how to use the miter saw aka chop saw\, drills sanders and nail gun to make and take home your very own boot bench.  \nEach class is built for beginners to learn basic skills including:\n \n\nDESIGN AND LAYOUT\nMEASURING AND MARKING\nCUTTING WITH POWER SAWS\nASSEMBLING AND FINISHING\nAND MORE!\n\n“Ladies… LADIES! You gotta trust me on this. Taking a class with Laura and Enerstructa was one of the best decisions of my life. NOT KIDDING. I like to think I’m independent\, and in many ways I am\, as are you. But learning my way around power tools with Laura\, well that’s been a whole other level of liberation and empowerment. Her classes are about carpentry and building stuff out of wood\, at face value. But they are also about building confidence and community. You’ll learn specific technical skills and be in the company of other like-minded females\, and walk away with a completed project and skills you’ll wanna tell your friends about (hence this review). If you are on the fence about taking a class with her\, here’s my pitch: don’t sit on the fence when you can learn to build the fence yourself. BOOM! I’m 100% Team Enerstructa and I think you will be too.” \n– Debi B.

SUMMARY:Music Series: Jenny Don't & the Spurs
DESCRIPTION:We are in for a real treat when Jenny Don’t & the Spurs comes to town. \nJenny Don’t & the Spurs have been pioneering their own path in the music world for over a dozen years. Known for their high-energy Country Western style and captivating stage presence\, they’ve garnered a global following with their infectious enthusiasm\,  and extensive discography\, featuring three albums\, an EP\, and nine singles. \nTheir 2021 LP\, Fire on the Ridge\, expanded their horizons\, leading them on tours to continents where few other country bands have had the opportunity to perform\, affirming their formidable presence in the country music scene. This latest release\, “Broken Hearted Blue\,” set to debut on June 14th\, 2024\, adds even more fuel to their fire. \nWith their exciting new album\, Broken Hearted Blue Jenny Don’t and the Spurs present 10 dynamic songs that channel the essence of the Northwest’s music sounds while evoking the nostalgia of the Western frontier. \nJenny Don’t earned her moniker in her youth for her strong-willed and independent nature\, often defying authority figures much to their consternation. This inherent rebelliousness led her to resonate with the authentic outlaw spirit of Country Western music. Such influences shine through in songs like “Pain in my Heart” and “One More Night\,” where the band channels the bold attitude and vocal style reminiscent of classic country legends like Johnny Paycheck and George Jones. Their music authentically captures the outlaw spirit while paying homage to the genre’s iconic figures. \nBorn in New Mexico\, Jenny later relocated to Washington state at a young age. Growing up\, she navigated the contrasting landscapes of the lush Pacific Northwest and the vast Southwestern desert\, which greatly influenced her songwriting. In the title track “Broken Hearted Blue\,” Jenny’s haunting vocals capture the intensity of a fleeting romantic moment\, complemented by lead guitarist Christopher March’s guitar work\, which echoes the haunting allure of the desert night sky with its reverb-drenched tones.

SUMMARY:Music Series: Rich Swanger
DESCRIPTION:Rich Swanger is an Oregon based songwriter with roots in folk\, gospel\, and country-blues music. Born amongst the Appalachian hills of Pennsylvania\, he was surrounded by song from the very beginning. He discovered harmony in the church choir and found an attraction to twang hearing his father strum country classics around the house. This led to a wild love for timeless melodies and rock-solid songwriting. A move to the Pacific Northwest in 2004 proved to be the catalyst he needed to start releasing some of his own music\, and further explore his love of the song. \n\n\n\nHis humble solo project\, Seahorse\, started in the late 2000’s and grew organically over the next decade to include some of the region’s most inspiring musicians. Sensing a need to address that change and growth\, he stepped out from behind the moniker in 2018 with a self-titled release\, ‘Rich Swanger & The Little Known Band.’ RS & LKB transformed his quiet\, folky originals into glistening country and blues songs\, while also emboldening him as a performer. Lo and behold\, he began to heed the deeper call of music. \nRich’s songs have been featured on the television show Shameless and his song “Didn’t Make a Sound” recently won Portland’s Folk Festival songwriting contest . He has also played TEDx Portland alongside Rebecca Jordan Smith (Prince\, John Legend). Swanger has recorded 4 full length albums and performs regularly around the Pacific Northwest as a solo act and with his group\, The Little Known Band. \nConcert is sponsored by the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce.

SUMMARY:Music Series: Daniel Adam Maltz\, Pianist
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Adam Maltz is a fortepianist based in Vienna\, Austria. \nHe specializes in Wiener Klassik (Viennese Classicism) — especially the works of Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven — performed on the Viennese fortepianos of their time. \nCalled “master of the Viennese fortepiano\,” Daniel’s performances are praised for their “extraordinary precision and lightness” (The Common Reader). Daniel studied fortepiano performance at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He refined his command of historical practices through private study with Andreas Staier and Ingomar Rainer. \nConcert is sponsored by Greater Oregon Behavioral Health\, Inc. (GOBHI).
